Before You Visit Someone in the Hospital

by General Caregiving, Practical Guidance0 comments

Do you have a friend in the hospital . . . or perhaps one who lives in a nursing home? If you’re planning a visit, here are a few things to think about.

First, and this may seem like common sense, but I think it must be said: if you even think you may be getting sick (or have been in close contact with someone who is sick), you will want to postpone your visit. You can still find a way to show your care with a phone call, text, or card.

Secondly, even if you feel healthy, be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before entering your friends’ room.  You could even keep a small hand sanitizer in the glove box of your car so it’s handy for you.

And third, if it’s appropriate, consider bringing a small gift. It doesn’t need to be anything elaborate. Bringing a small gift helps break the ice and gives you and your friend something to talk about. A favorite snack, a magazine, a small plant, or something that simply says, “I was thinking about you,” can help make the beginning of a visit a little easier.

A few minutes of preparation will ensure that your visit with your friend or family member brings comfort and care.

God Bless.
