Who Killed Jimmie Lee Jackson?

Recently I watched the movie, “Selma,” which tells the story of the  1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in search of equal voting rights.  I remember many horrific scenes and words spoken, but the one scene which still challenges me (and you too?) today is when during one of the marches a young man, whose name was Jimmie Lee Jackson, was killed and Martin Luther King, somberly yet passionately, spoke at his funeral. He challenged the citizens of the United States during those difficult times and he also challenges us today.  He said,

”Who murdered Jimmie Lee Jackson? Every white lawman who abuses the law to terrorize. Every white politician who feeds on prejudice and hatred. Every white preacher who preaches the Bible and stays silent before his white congregation. Who murdered Jimmie Lee Jackson? Every Negro man and woman who stands by without joining this fight as their brothers and sisters are brutalized, humiliated, and ripped from this Earth.”

When the news today tells of innocent individuals being killed, what is my response? Am I (and are you )responsible because we do nothing about the injustice being practiced?
