When the World Feels Huge, Go Small

by General Caregiving, Practical Guidance0 comments

Do you get overwhelmed reading the news? Me too. That’s why, when ministry team member Christy wrote a powerful article describing how worries about the world’s difficulties were making her anxious, I paid close attention. I highly recommend you read Christy’s post about tending her “square inch of the world.”

When I become worried about the state of our world, it’s helpful to remember Christy’s advice: we don’t have to take care of everyone and all things, just focus on our own corner of the globe. It helps put things in perspective.

One of the best ways for me to dial back on feeling sad, lonely, or anxious is to think outside of myself. There are so many people in our immediate vicinity who can use our care and attention. And when we put our focus on others’ needs, we tend to a space where we can make a difference.

So, when the world’s problems feel huge, I suggest you go “small” — do a small act of kindness that puts the power in your hands.

Here are six ideas for small acts of kindness that will make a big difference to those who receive them:

  • Pray for God’s protection when you pass by a school
  • Give your pastor a gift card to their favorite bookstore or coffee shop
  • Leave money on a vending machine with a note that says, “Enjoy your snack.”
  • Compliment three people today.
  • Offer to run errands for a recently bereaved person.
  • Text a supportive message to a friend who is going through a rough time.
