Do you know a World War II veteran in your family, neighborhood or church? Would you like to give him or her a “mind-blowing” experience– a thank-you experience which will put a smile on their faces and a smile in their hearts?
Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. Honor Flight flies our heroes to Washington, D.C to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans, and they receive a hero’s welcome wherever they visit.
Recently, my friend Rodger accompanied his 92 year old father, a WWII veteran, on this trip to Washington. Rodger said,
- So many people don’t realize that our WWII vets (and all vets for that matter) are heroes and this Honor Flight is a way for them to realize how much we appreciate what they did for us. For a day, they are treated like rock stars.
- The process also gives the veterans a way to honor their friends that they consider heroes – those that gave their life and didn’t make it back. I think this is also a very important part of the trip.
- A meaningful moment for me was when we looked at the Freedom Wall memorial. It shows 4,048 gold stars, each representing 100 Americans that sacrificed their life for our freedom in WWII. The quote displayed across the wall is, “HERE WE MARK THE PRICE OF FREEDOM.”
- My dad was overwhelmed with the day and still talks about it.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.
