“Mam, do you need help?”

Running late as usual, because I always have a hundred things on my plate, I noticed my gas tank was low. Frustrated, I pulled up to the gas pump, grabbed my credit card, jumped out of the car, swiped my card, and started filling the gas tank. How much gas can I get by with I wondered, not having time to fill up the tank completely. Waiting for the number to reach $26, I saw an elderly woman with her credit card in her hand looking lost and bewildered. “Mam, do you need help?”

She told me her husband recently died and he always filled the car up with gas. She had waited as long as she could but now her gas tank was on empty. She didn’t look embarrassed, she looked sad and lonely. A simple task like filling up her gas tank made her think of her lifelong partner she had recently lost. I almost missed this opportunity by being so busy myself that I didn’t see someone who needed help.

After filling her gas tank, sharing a few of my own embarrassing moments and having a good laugh, she drove off with a full tank, the knowledge of how to put gas in her car and a smile on her face. I climbed back in my own car thanking God that He had slowed me down enough to help someone who needed help.

Lord, help me not be so busy where I miss seeing people who are in need. Open my eyes to see what you want me to see.
