If you are going through a difficult time, please do not be afraid to tell others what you need or want. People will respond with amazing generosity. Friends and family often want to help, but don’t know how. If you let them know specific ways they can help, you will be doing them, as well as yourself, a favor.

When my friend Janet was in the hospital, I kept asking her, “What may I do for you? What may I bring you?” She kept responding, “I can’t think of anything.” Then one day she called and said, “I know what you can do for me. Paul and I have tickets for a symphony concert on Saturday, and I would like you to go with him. I don’t want the tickets wasted.”

I was so glad when she told me what she really wanted. What a lovely way to care. I enjoyed a nice dinner and concert with a friend— for a friend.

Let your friends know what you need.
