When is the last time you surprised someone?

A few minutes ago the doorbell rang.  I was busy recording radio programs and decided to ignore it, but the person was persistent; so, I finally stomped down the steps to the door.  When I opened the door I was surprised to see two children from the neighborhood:  Alden and Taylor.  I wondered what they wanted.

Then they handed me a jar of homemade strawberry jam. “Oh!” I said.  I didn’t know what to say or do because I wondered if they were selling jam.  After an awkward pause I said, “Did you make this jam?”  They proudly said, “Yes.” More pauses.

Then I read the note that they had handed me along with the jam.  It said, “Hope you enjoy this homemade strawberry jam – From the Gort family.”  That’s when I realized they weren’t selling anything.  The jam was a nice, very nice, surprise without any strings attached.  How wonderful!

I love surprises and their surprise gift encouraged me to think of ways to surprise someone else.  Maybe you can also surprise someone this week!

Speaking of strawberry jam, here is a unique version, courtesy of Donna Sawyer’s Celebrating Life and Food blog — Strawberry Jam with Coconut Rum & Lemon Zest.
