Mommy, Listen to Me!

“Mommy, listen to me! Quit saying Uh huh, and give me an answer!”

How many of us Mommies are guilty of tuning out our children’s chatter, punctuating only with a few well-spaced hu huhs?

Have you ever noticed how frequently the phrase, “Incline thine ear to me” occurs in the Psalms? Bend down and listen to me! And God bends his ear, listens, and answers. What an example for us as parents! What an example for us as caring friends.

Good listening often takes some bending—getting down to the same level. I’ve found that squatting, or sitting down on the floor with my young children aids greatly in our communication. Real listening is work! It requires concentration. It takes time. It is one way to say, “I love you.”

Psalm 17:6 says, “I have called on Thee, O God, for Thou wilt answer me. Incline Thine ear to me; hear my words.” As God bends his ear and listens and answers us, may we also bend our ear and listen, really listen, to others.
