It is really true: when I take a few minutes each day to connect with a person who is struggling, I experience more peace, joy, and energy in my life.  I’ve heard this referred to as, “God’s Economy”—When you give, you receive.

For example: A few weeks ago, it was strawberry season in Michigan. (I hope that you have tasted Michigan strawberries because they are definitely the “best.”) Anyway, I texted my friend Joan, who is recovering from complicated leg surgery and radiation, and whose life is filled with medications and doctors’ appointments. In the text, I asked her if she had enjoyed strawberry shortcake this season.  She responded, “No.” So I picked some strawberries and delivered shortcake to her door.

Here is her response:

“I had the best brunch today.  I don’t think I’ve had better-tasting strawberries in my life. I mixed them with a little sugar and let them soak and then I put the biscuits on a big plate and loaded them with those strawberries and that was so delicious. . . Thank you so much for the delicious treat. And thank you for always thinking of things that are unusual and so welcome. . . This afternoon I have radiation and then physical therapy; so, now I have energy to move forward with both of those things.”

Her words warmed my heart. For me, it is true: caring for another person by reaching out and connecting with them blesses two lives— theirs and the one reaching out.

It is true, and not just for me. Vivek Murthy, former U.S. Surgeon General, says this about volunteerism, which is a form of caring for others:

“For an individual, the data is increasingly clear that service (caring for others) has a positive impact on our physical health, reducing the risk of heart disease and our overall mortality. It also improves cognitive function. When it comes to loneliness and building community, service is one of the most powerful antidotes we have to loneliness.”

Is it true for you? Try it! Find a few minutes each day to help someone else and notice how it makes you feel.

God bless.
