Some days are dark and dreary, and Michigan seems to have more than its share of those days, especially during the winter months. When you add to this dismal cloudy view snow and cold temperatures, this can bring on the winter “doldrums.”
But . . .
I know a way out of those doldrums. The way out was taught by a great teacher. He said, forget yourself for a little while and follow his way: reach out and create ripples of care and kindness. (This is my interpretation of Matthew 16:24.)
Did you know there is something called the “multiplier effect”? It occurs when we see someone being kind to others and then we’re more likely to also be kind. So, there are three people who benefit from an act of kindness: the giver, the receiver and anyone who sees the generous act.
And any of us can get that ripple started.
Here is an idea to consider: challenge yourself to reach out. For the next five days, will you take one action that will extend kindness out into the world? Consider it your personal “Kindness Ripple Challenge.” An example might be:
- Day 1: Compliment someone sincerely.
- Day 2: Donate to or thank a local service worker.
- Day 3: Write a note to someone who is struggling.
- Day 4: Post about someone else’s kindness online.
- Day 5: Reflect on how it made you feel.
So, to fight the winter “blahs” or other difficult times you might be experiencing, start a ripple effect of kindness.
If you complete this challenge, please let me know at my contact page. Let’s create a ripple of kindness that spreads far and wide!
