My Great Grandma Lives On

by Aging & Elderly, Wisdom1 comment

I was fortunate to know my great grandparents, to be loved by them, and for them to be a part of my life. My great grandpa was taken too soon from Alzheimer’s when I was younger, but my grandma was here physically with us until my third year of college.

My great grandma Winnie was one of the most important people in my life. She loved and protected her family. She loved her grandchildren with her whole self. After Grandma passed away, I inherited some of her bakeware. Every time I bake, I think of her.

The other day while baking, Grandma Winnie’s measuring cup fell out of my cupboard and shattered. Memories and tears came flooding in as I swept up the broken pieces. I remembered Grandma would sing “Billy Boy” while cooking or baking in the kitchen; I still hear her voice singing that tune. She still exists in things I do today, like when I bake. And it’s those memories of our times together that keep Grandma Winnie alive in my mind.

In today’s world it is so easy to let important moments pass us by. We choose to text instead of call. We become too busy for Sunday dinners. If your grandparents are still alive, consider spending time with them. Don’t let moments that we have to love, and be loved, pass us by.  Create meaningful moments now so the special people in your life, like grandparents, live on.

Thank you for sharing a favorite memory of mine, Grandma. I pray that this is an encouragement to others to take the time they have, and spend it with those they love.
