“I had an absolute blast!” said Jennifer one recent summer day.
What did she do that was so much fun? No, she did not win the lottery or ride on the world’s largest roller coaster. Instead, Jennifer did miles of paper work to make it possible for her friend Josiah to go to Camp Sunshine for four days.
Camp Sunshine offers people ages 12 to 50 years old with developmental disabilities the opportunity to attend summer camp in a safe, caring and inclusive environment. There is a joyful spirit about Camp Sunshine that is transformative for every person who attends – whether they’re a camper, counselor or volunteer. The camp has an atmosphere that honors all people with total acceptance and unconditional love.
Jennifer says, “I had an absolute blast! When I picked Josiah up from camp, he was so happy! In the car, Josiah said, ‘They all really liked me at camp!’”
Cindy, the Director of Camp Sunshine, told me that the goal of Camp Sunshine is to do just that—to make every camper feel special and loved. She added, “Sometimes this camp is the highlight of their year!”
Do you know a person with developmental disabilities? What can you do to make that person feel special and loved all year long?
