On Memorial Day weekend, before you fire up the grill or pack the car to head for the beach, consider taking a few minutes to remember the purpose of the holiday.

Memorial Day is an important holiday in the United States that was established to give us a time to remember and honor the men and women who died in wars or in the service of their county. For a moving tribute to the fallen, please view the YouTube video The True Meaning of Memorial Day.

Following are some of the ways to help celebrate the true meaning of Memorial Day:

  • Do you know a soldier who died in a war? Search your family tree. Ask other family members and relatives, if in your family tree there was a person who died in a war, and which one? Where did he or she die? Find the country on a world map.
  • Be proud and thankful for this person by telling others about him or her.
  • If possible, write a note of appreciation to the family and friends of the deceased soldier acknowledging the sacrifice of their loved one. For ideas on what to say, visit the Obituaries Help website for their suggestions on “sympathy words to write about the military.” Use these ideas as a starting point and then personalize the message by adding your own heart-felt words.

Taking time to remember and honor an individual who served and died in the United States military will help to make our Memorial Day celebrations more meaningful, and we will also feel more patriotic.  We will not forget.
